A man’s invention to guide medical intravenous tubing has won first place at this year’s Marketplace inventor’s contest. Robert Heitkamp of Mantador says he came up with the idea for his so-called "site saver" device during a prolonged hospital stay and drew the design on the back of an insurance form. He says it has a series of clips that guide and align the IV tubing.
Heitkamp says he’s hoping to market it after another round of tests. He got $2,500 for winning the contest.

Innovating North Dakota: Investing in new business
It was an extended hospital stay and an insurance form that combined to inspire Mantador entrepreneur Bob Heitkamp’s winning invention. During his 17-day hospitalization, Heitkamp needed to have an intravenous (IV) line inserted in his hand, and he found there to be problems with the stability and comfort of his IV.
The Site Saver is a small plastic support system, which Heitkamp says stabilizes and grips the tubing that delivers intravenous fluids into the body.
